Before an update#
- Duplicate or download a backup of the current theme.
- Record custom code, app integrations, template assignments and important settings.
- Install or prepare the updated theme as an unpublished copy. Use Shopify’s available theme update flow when eligible.
- Compare home, product, collection, search, cart and special templates.
- Recheck apps, custom code, languages and dynamic sources before publishing the update.
What needs review#
Do not assume all custom code or settings will transfer automatically between different theme versions or installation packages. Media and content references are store-specific. Keep the previous theme in the library until you have verified the new one.
Current release notes#
Check the version in your theme library before updating. Public release notes will accompany the release package when available.
