Metafields and dynamic sources
Connect reusable layouts to product-specific content without editing code.
Prepare a value in Shopify#
- Create a metafield definition for the relevant resource in Shopify’s custom data settings. Choose the type that matches the intended content.
- Open a product or other resource and fill in that metafield.
- Open its template in the theme editor.
- For a compatible setting, select the dynamic-source icon and choose the metafield.
- Preview another resource using the same template to confirm its own value appears.
Match the content type#
| Content | Typical destination |
|---|
| Rich text | Product details, an accordion answer, text block, or review content. |
| Image | An image setting that supports an image dynamic source. |
| Page reference | A size guide page setting or other page picker when Shopify offers the compatible source. |
| Product reference or list | A compatible product picker or list; availability depends on context and setting type. |
Troubleshooting a missing connection#
- The dynamic-source icon only appears for compatible settings.
- Check that the definition belongs to the resource type being previewed.
- Fill in the value on the actual preview resource, not just the definition.
- If you enter static text in a shared template, every resource using it sees that text.
