Before installing#
- Keep a backup or duplicate of your current theme.
- Use the theme ZIP itself, not a download folder containing documentation or additional archives.
- Check that your Shopify plan supports the theme you intend to use.
- If you purchase through the Theme Store, follow Shopify’s purchase and licensing flow for your store. This documentation does not imply Tessaro is already listed.
Upload a ZIP#
- In Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes.
- In your theme library, choose the option to add or import a theme, then upload the ZIP file. Shopify may change the wording of these controls.
- Wait until the new theme appears in the library. Open its theme editor or preview.
- Keep the theme unpublished while you configure it. Publishing is a separate action.
What installation does not transfer#
A theme ZIP does not import the demo catalog, navigation menu contents, page records, blog articles, store policies, shipping rates, customer information, or payment configuration. Select your own resources in the theme editor. Store-specific images and references can require reconnecting.
If the upload fails#
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Missing layout or invalid ZIP | Make sure the archive contains theme folders directly, including layout, sections, assets, and templates. Do not ZIP an extra parent folder. |
| The theme is in the library but looks empty | Open the editor and connect images, collections, products, and menus. Review hidden sections. |
| A product template is unavailable for assignment | Confirm the template belongs to the appropriate theme. Shopify’s assignment controls can depend on the published theme; preview an unpublished template in the editor first. |
Publish when ready#
Use Shopify’s publish action only after completing your setup and launch checks. Keep the previous theme in the library so you can inspect or return to it if needed.
